Ian Hall, Owner/Designer

My love of the garden and landscaping no doubt was nurtured early on as my early childhood was spent in the garden of my family home in the Santa Cruz Mountains, following the instructions of my elite gardener, mother.  She did her best to keep my attention on what were the good plants that got to stay… and what were the bad ones, which of course needed to be removed.  My many mishaps at this endeavor were great for learning, although an overall detriment to her overall goals, as many of the ‘good’ plants met a very early demise indeed!  It all paid off for her though when I got big enough to dig planting holes and haul countless wheelbarrows of manure and compost for her.

Attending Los Gatos High School and needing money to have any hope of getting a date, I translated these early skills into a job for Birdsong Landscaping, and quickly got to the point of running a small crew for the owner.  It was here that I scratched out my earliest designs on school note paper, and selected plants from the local nurseries to finish up my mini masterpieces… at least in my mind!

On to college where I studied Botany, Environmental Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, and Viticulture … because I do have to say grape vines are my favorite plant of all.  Especially when the end result is a fine Cabernet, Pinot Noir, or Zinfandel.

In my long landscape design career, I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to design homes in nearly every county in Northern California and have been delighted to study and become knowledgeable in the local micro climates, soils, and unique styles of architecture.

My installed designs have been featured in national based company advertisements and nationally distributed calendars.  I have also had the honor of being featured in multiple episodes of the popular DIY network & HGTV show YardCrashers.  I have also been hired for creating gardens in nationally televised commercials featuring gardening products.

In my break from doing designs, I worked in San Francisco for the dot.com company PlantSense which manufactured the innovative EasyBloom plant sensor.  There I managed the vast plant database for the sensor, and acted as the face of the company to our customers as the ‘Plant Doctor’ where I answered their questions and blogged about plants and horticulture.  This even furthered my education and experience in horticulture in landscaping…especially in the greater Bay Area where we were based and did most of our research and work.

I can’t wait to use my vast experience in landscaping and horticulture to create the absolute perfect outdoor living space for you and your family.  Look forward to seeing you and your yard soon!

Now time to meet the rest of the team… the ones who make me look great at what I do.

Marc Wilkie, Lead Designer

So one might ask me… “How do you make your company better?”  My answer… “Bring on someone better than me!”  Yes I said it… and it’s true!  But ya know.. barely… I do have an ego to protect.

As Lead Designer, Marc is the integral factor as your design is underway.  His collaboration with Ian and Corey on our projects (and us on his projects) is what brings our designs to the next level.  When Marc comes to your residence you are in the best hands possible to get your property transformed to your ultimate dream outdoor living space.

Marc Started working the Napa area in the Spring of 2007, after having worked as a Landscape Designer in the Bay Area for over 15 years.  Working in the Napa/Sonoma area, Marc was able to develop a personal style he calls “Napa meets Restoration Hardware”.  This style combines a modern cleanness with old world charm and brings the new and the old together by combining large flex spaces with warm wood and stone surfaces.

Marc brings a varied experience to his designs, having worked on projects ranging from small residential sites, all the way to large estates.  He has commercial knowledge that includes winery planning and implementation.  He has worked as a Lead Landscape Designer in multiple companies and has extensive knowledge as a Project Manager in the landscape construction field.

In his spare time, Marc enjoys mountain biking, skiing, hiking with his two Whippets and Surfing.

Marc’s 30 years of experience of award-winning designs are ready to be implemented into your outdoor space.  His creative design and build experience puts you in good hands to the creation of an elite outdoor living space.

Beckie Kover, Design Manager/Remote Designer

Beckie has been a pain in my butt now for the literal entirety of Hall Landscape Design’s existence as a company!  Yes, that is nearly 20 years of working together!  Why would I say a pain in the butt?  Because she is obsessed with great customer service!  She has intense attention to detail and is always all over me to keep things working smoothly.  When a client has questions or concerns… or if there are issues with a design… or if contractors have questions or need explanations after the design process, Beckie will be sure that every bit of it is clarified and answered!  With Over 33 years of design and landscaping experience, Beckie has seen and done it all.  A former landscape contractor and lifelong landscape designer, I can’t tell you how lucky we are to have her on our team!  We are literally family at this point, as she has seen the ebbs and flows of my company through every economic swing … weathering every storm and here we are, still here going strong!

Your main point of contact with Hall Landscape Design, and in charge of our plant nursery and broker side of the company.  Her duties also include taking care of clients in need of a remote design.  So, Beckie wears many hats in Hall Landscape Design, and they all fit well!

Corey Withsosky, Designer

Meet Corey!  My secret weapon of creative destruction!  Destruction only in kindest sense of the word, as many a poorly or non-landscaped yards have been destructed by her creative interpretation of my ideas as they get put to paper (ok… by digital drafting, but you get the idea!).  Every design that I put in front of you has her personal touch and a ton of her time getting the flow, balance, and theme just right for your yard.  A natural talent of designing yards with an intuitive sense of creating outdoor living space, Corey is my right-hand woman in getting your yard put together correctly, and always has me considering other directions to take a design.  A thousand different designers would take your outdoor living space in a thousand different directions.  Together we make sure your yard is put in the correct direction.  Busy as we are, she is always a great point of communication and works diligently on the smaller details to get your design refined and correct.  Her lifelong quest for seeking the mountains for the perfect slope, has given her a broad spectrum of knowledge of different microclimates, theme, and horticulture that has honed her style and talents to where they are today.

Now with over 12 years of experience in design, Corey Graduated in 2011 from Cal Poly Pomona with a bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture and minor in regenerative studies.  Corey has designed properties from Bend, Oregon to San Diego, California.  We love having her right here in the middle, bringing her talents here to the North Bay Area with Hall Landscape Design.

Candace Cortez, Design Administrator

Also, a main point of contact with Hall Landscape Design, Candace will always be available (during working hours of course) to answer your questions, schedule your meetings, and get you to the right person in regard to your current (or future) design.  She is naturally accountable and wants nothing more than to please you as our client.  When the design team needs a nudge to address your needs or concerns, you couldn’t have anyone better on your side.  Candace’s attention to detail and a quick study to every new task I assign her to, is what makes her an invaluable member of my team.  I literally couldn’t do this without her, since she fixed my plotter (out of commission for months btw!)  on her first day on the job! But seriously she is an irreplaceable cog in the machine that is Hall Landscape Design.

Her part of the process for your design is, she will be on site once we are underway to laser measure in your yard to the upmost of accuracy and will be taking all site photos as well.  Since her other job is a professional photographer, we are very lucky to have her to be the one to revisit your yard after installation and take those beautiful ‘After’ shots as well.  We love showing off what we have done with your landscape, and her skills will represent that very well!  A born artist, with an eye for beauty in design, I am so lucky to have Candace on the team!
